Verisign’s new wing

Verisign is going to assign a new sector within their gigantic empire of domain registry to focus on .coms and .nets online transaction security.

SAN FRANCISCO - VeriSign Inc. plans to shed a slew of business units to focus on securing online transactions and managing the “.com” and “.net” domain name registry.

The Mountain View-based company is scheduled to announce its plans, though not any done deals, on Wednesday in a meeting with analysts.

Chief Executive Bill Roper said in an interview beforehand that he will outline the results of the company’s recent review of its business units. It plans to sell businesses where it’s not the clear front-runner and focus on areas where it is, Roper said.

Roper declined to name a price for any division, and he said the company has not selected all divisions to be sold.

VeriSign’s primary technology is behind some of the most common activities on the Internet, including making sure that Web surfers can reach sites with “.com” and “.net” domain names and that Internet shoppers have an encrypted line of communication with online merchants.

Extort your way to a place in Google Corp.

I am serious, that’s what the guy did. He bought several Google related domain names, held that hostage, and demanded an exchange for those names with a job at Google. LOL!

A cybersquatter wanting a job with Google has been rather inventive. “Sebastian Klein, a network administrator, has registered at least eight Google-related internet domain names and, in a letter posted in 10 languages on each of the sites, he demands a job in exchange for handing over ownership of the names,” reports The Associated Press.

I would imagine Google, or any other company for that matter, wouldn’t be too impressed at being held to ransom, but I guess you would have to concede it is a novel approach.

Novel or not, I think the guy is a genius! Why didn’t I think of that? Oh right, cos it’s not so genius after all if you’re not exactly good enough to be hired by google but extorted your way in.

Rootserver for sale?

Verisign is purportedly selling one of its rootservers. In any case, having the rootserver is like having a one-up against all the other domains since all hits goes through these servers first.

The root servers are what make domain names work on the Internet, meaning that many domain queries hit these servers on their way to a site or an email recipient.

Why is this data so interesting? It contains the majority of failed lookups, meaning the Verisign nameservers will be hit and log the query, when someone enters a domain name that does not exist. While many domain-tasters have obtained this information directly from ISPs, getting this directly from Verisign would be a step up the chain, since Verisign manages two of the 13 root name servers.

Dot Mobi domains goes to the highest bidders

The Dot-Mobi domains are being sold on an auction process rather than a “first come, first served” basis. Why not since this would be maximizing profits albeit a little unscrupulously. No i take that back, what’s unscrupulous about it? It’s just business, plus having an auction gives everyone a chance to bid. Maybe the best bidder wins. And they did. Dot-Mobi domains have some pretty high bidders.

The register.

The first dot-mobi auction has closed on a high, with domain name marketplace Sedo.com selling 100 mobile web addresses to the highest bidders.

This was the first time the mobile domain names have been sold through an auction process rather than on a “first come, first served” basis. The web addresses were some of the 5,500 “premium names” - commonly-used, generic words and phrases - set aside by dotMobi (the company managing the new dot-mobi top level domain) before the launch of the domain in September 2006.

Bidders from 34 countries went head to head to get their hands on the most popular domain names, such as hosting.mobi, which sold for $101,000, bank.mobi, which had a price tag of $51,501, download.mobi, which went for $51,500, currency.mobi, for $47,000, and insurance.mobi, which had a closing bid of $42,005.

In total, the auction generated more than $850,000 for the continued creation of mobile content tools.

It seems the dot-mobi domains are now being taken seriously by the industry, with the insurance.mobi domain snapped up by Insurance.com, an independent online insurance agency that allows customers to compare and buy car insurance from several different firms.

“With more than 1.6 billion mobile users around the world, it’s obvious that brands are quickly realising that the audience for mobile content is enormous,” said David Ryder, dotMobi’s chief marketing officer. “This auction proves that dotMobi has some of the most-wanted domain names in the world, and it’s exciting to start seeing how they’ll be used for content.”

Another auction is due to be held on 31 October, with a third to kick off on 28 November.

“We knew that the dotMobi’s premium names portfolio would be a success on the Sedo platform; however, the results of this auction went beyond our expectations,” said Tim Schumacher, chief executive of Sedo. “We are now even more excited about our upcoming .mobi auction on 31 October when names like car.mobi, gps.mobi, gay.mobi, kiss.mobi, love.mobi and map.mobi will be available.”
